It’s Not About You
Letting Go of Self-Centered Narratives and Live Your Life for Real.
In life, we each live in our own narratives. Every day, we observe, interpret, and build stories around what we see, often as a way to make sense of things or feel better about them. I get it—I’ve been there, too.
But let’s talk about what happens when our stories become too self-centered. Imagine creating narratives about others, getting upset or disappointed based on assumptions, and blaming them for things they never actually did. It’s easy to let our minds fill in the blanks without understanding the full picture, but in the end, we’re often only hurting ourselves.
When Narratives Become Self-Centered
Have you ever known someone who is constantly caught in their own negative storyline? They interpret everything as a slight against them, blame others, and act as though they’re the victim in every situation. Through life, I’ve learned to avoid creating assumptions about others’ behaviors. I understand now that these assumptions are rarely accurate and only lead to misunderstanding and unnecessary pain.
Everyone has struggles. From the outside, some people may appear to have everything together, but that’s rarely the full story. The difference isn’t that some people have perfect lives; it’s how they handle the challenges they face.
The Cost of Living in Your Own Narrative
There’s someone I know who lives in a bubble, convinced that every negative thing is directed at them. They’re quick to blame everyone else, seeing themselves as innocent, while others are always at fault. It’s tough to watch, and I’ve often felt like saying, “It’s not about you.” But when someone is so deeply invested in their own narrative, they can’t see or hear anyone else. They’re living in a self-imposed, miserable reality, where everyone else is the problem.
After trying to help, I decided to let go. Trying to get through to them only drained my energy. Life is too precious to waste on someone else’s misguided drama. I’d rather be fully present in my own life, appreciating the moment.
It’s Not About You—Letting Go and Seeing Clearly
Here’s the truth: you can transform your experience in any given situation. The circumstances may be the same, but your perspective is up to you. When you stop seeing yourself as the center of everyone’s actions, you begin to find freedom.
Be the main character in your life, yes, but not at the expense of making everyone else a “sub-character” in your drama. Live your own life with an open mind and respect that others are doing the same.
So, open your eyes. Step out of your bubble. Not everything is about you. Be present and appreciate the world beyond your own perspective. When we learn to understand others truly, we begin to grow and glow. The world becomes richer, kinder, and more meaningful when we remember that it’s not all about us.
